Hehku 20 · Clock display controller

Satellite-synchronised timekeeping for large pixel clock displays.

Hehku 20 is a controller for clock displays built from WS2815 pixel strips. It obtains the time from GNSS satellites and drives the pixels.

How it works

  1. Time from satellites

A GNSS receiver provides the date and time, and a real-time clock maintains it between fixes. An external active antenna connects to an SMA jack on the board.

  2. One chain of pixels

The display has four digits of seven segments plus three extra segments, 31 in all. Each segment is a short run of WS2815 pixels, typically 10, and all segments share a single data line.

  3. Power through the board

The 12 V supply feeds the strips through the board. The maximum draw is 6 A at full white, and the supply should be rated 7 to 8 A.

Features

External GNSS antenna

The SMA jack accepts an active antenna on a cable, so the antenna can be placed with a clear view of the sky.

Standard WS2815 strips

WS2815 strips run directly from the 12 V input. The strip density is about 96 LEDs per metre.

Supply input protection

The 12 V path includes reverse-polarity protection, a surge suppressor and an 8 A fuse.

Display size

A display 0.5 m wide has about 150 LEDs and draws about 3 A. Larger displays require power to be fed in along the display.
